Moments of Grace is Koos van der Lende's life's work in one book: the most powerful panoramas from eighteen years of photography across Southern Africa, from Angola and Malawi to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and the Seychelles.

It is made only from film. The book is hand assembled, covered in linen cloth and kept in a handmade leather pouch. It is panoramic in shape, like the pictures, and opens to a full metre wide, so each 6 × 17 cm slide can be seen in all its detail. It was nine years in the making and was completed in 2016, in a print run of 1,000 copies.

The cover carries African Sunrise, a baobab and sandstone at Mapungubwe, the picture Koos says depicts Africa. Every photograph in the book is also available as a signed, limited edition print.

Why the book was made

Koos wrote in the book's opening pages that he hoped it would do more than show pictures. He wanted it to bless the generations to come.

After nine years in the making, Moments of Grace has finally become a reality. A book that not only shows a God inspired passion for photography and His beautiful creation, but aims to instil in the viewer a sense of peace and awe at the magnificence of our continent, to bless our future generations with hope and evidence of God's gracious love.— Koos van der Lende, Moments of Grace

African Sunrise

Koos spent close to two months at Mapungubwe, where the Shashe meets the Limpopo and three countries meet, before it opened to the public. A baobab beside sandstone is the scene that says Mapungubwe. Facing into the early light, he let the tree fall into silhouette while the rock kept its warm colour, and he chose the picture for the cover of his book.
